First Time Homebuyer Feedback

Scott McEachern |

If you’ve ever thought of buying a home and making the biggest purchase of your life, you may get that feeling of being overwhelmed.

Take a breath.

We’re here to help you with the process.

A new home purchase requires planning. There is quite a bit to learn, research, and compare before making your final decision. Because we work with a lot of first time home buyers, we thought it’d be neat to get a little perspective from them on what they thought of the buying process and what they learned from the experience.

How did you find the buying process, being a first time homebuyer?

A&J: The buying process was fun for us because we used a husband and wife broker and realtor team. They eliminated the need for us to do the communicating between the two, and they understood our budget and never showed us anything we couldn't afford.

T&M: In some aspects, it happened very quickly and it's a bit of a whirlwind.  But at the same time, it also felt like it was taking forever, like completing all the paperwork and then the long wait until closing day. It's all very exciting and nerve wracking at the same time.

What advice can you give to first time home buyers?

A&J: We recommend getting a home inspection. It was the most valuable piece of info we received.

M&T: Do your research and be prepared. Know what all is involved in buying a house and what the costs are. We looked on MLS for years before we bought, we spoke to a realtor early on, we knew exactly what we were looking for, where we looking, and what we could afford. It made the whole process a lot easier.

What was your biggest lesson in the buying process?

A&J: The biggest lesson is that in addition to the down payment, you must pay closing costs. A lot of people don’t plan for that. These can cost up to $6,000, depending on the home.

M&T: Having to look at our finances to see how much we could afford and realizing how much we spend and on what. It really opened our eyes and made us be more responsible with our money and where it goes.

As you can see, both couple went through the same process, but had different experiences and learned different things. If you have questions or concerns, why not pick up the phone and get the answer? Helping people achieve their financial goals (like buying their first home) is just one of the many reasons we have a passion for this business.
